Morning and Evening Duas: A Simple Daily Adhkar Routine That Sticks

Learn the essential morning and evening duas (adhkar) with Arabic, transliteration, and meaning — and a realistic way to make them a daily habit.

The morning and evening adhkar are the most structured dua practice in the Sunnah: a short set of remembrances the Prophet ﷺ said at the start and end of every day. They take a few minutes, they cover protection, gratitude, and forgiveness — and they’re the easiest place to begin if you want a daily dua routine that actually lasts.

Here are the essential morning and evening duas, and a realistic way to keep them.

When do morning and evening adhkar begin?

Scholars generally place the morning adhkar between Fajr and sunrise, and the evening adhkar between Asr and Maghrib — with flexibility either side. If you miss the window, say them when you remember. A dhikr said late is better than a dhikr skipped.

1. Sayyid al-Istighfar — the master supplication for forgiveness

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ Allahumma anta Rabbi, la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduka, wa ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wa wa’dika mastata’tu, a’udhu bika min sharri ma sana’tu, abu’u laka bini’matika ‘alayya, wa abu’u bidhanbi, faghfir li, fa innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa anta.

“O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no deity except You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I keep Your covenant and promise as much as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favour upon me, and I acknowledge my sin — so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.” — Sahih al-Bukhari 6306

The Prophet ﷺ called this the master of seeking forgiveness: whoever says it in the morning with conviction and dies that day enters Paradise, and likewise in the evening.

2. The dua of the new day

“We have entered the morning, and the dominion belongs to Allah. All praise is for Allah; there is no deity except Allah alone, without partner.” — Sahih Muslim 2723

In the evening, it begins Amsayna wa amsal-mulku lillah — “We have entered the evening…“

3. Protection in Allah’s name — three times

Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma’asmihi shay’un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama’, wa huwas-Sami’ul-‘Alim.

“In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the heavens can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.” — Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3388

Said three times morning and evening. The narration promises that nothing will harm the one who says it.

4. The three Quls

Recite Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq, and Surah an-Nas three times each, morning and evening (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082). The Prophet ﷺ told ‘Abdullah ibn Khubayb: “They will suffice you against everything.”

5. Ayat al-Kursi

Reciting Ayat al-Kursi (Qur’an 2:255) in the morning and evening is among the most powerful protections in the Sunnah — the one who recites it at night has a guardian from Allah until morning (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311).

How to actually keep this routine

  • Anchor it to prayers you already pray. Right after Fajr, right after Asr — no new time slot needed. This is the same principle behind building any dua habit gently.
  • Start with two, not twelve. Sayyid al-Istighfar plus the three Quls is a complete beginner’s routine. Add one dhikr a week.
  • Keep them where you’ll see them. A saved list you open daily beats a memory you have to summon — and writing them down changes how they land.

FAQ

What if I miss the morning window? Say them when you remember. The reward of consistency is built over months, not protected by perfection on any single day.

Do I have to say the adhkar in Arabic? The transmitted wording carries specific virtue, and short formulas like these are very learnable — transliteration is fine while you learn. Understand the meaning either way; that’s where presence comes from.

How long does the routine take? The five above take roughly five minutes. That’s the entire cost of bookending your day with protection, forgiveness, and gratitude.
